Summer Clearance Cart Update

Summary (tl;dr):

We brought in $1132.00 from selling books off the cart this summer. We matched that and donated a total of $2264.00 to local charities.

Details:

For the past few years, we have been putting out a cart full of "extra"/"discount" books during the summer months. Usually we use the proceeds to buy coffee and snacks for the staff.

This year we did something a little different. This year we decided to donate the proceeds from the cart to a local charity. Turns out there are many excellent charities doing great work in the community! We found it impossible to narrow it down to just one. So we chose TWO local charities.

This summer the cart brought in $1132.00. We will be doubling that amount to $2264.00 so that we that we can donate $1132.00 each to two local charities: Royal City Mission Church and Action Read Community Literacy Centre of Guelph.

We chose Action Read because literacy is critical to building resiliency. I can't help but think of the story of "One Hundred Bags of Rice", which can be summed up: "If hundred bags of rice are eaten, they are lost instantly, but if they are put towards education, they will become the ten-thousand or one million bags of tomorrow."

But we also wanted to support Royal City Mission, because there are, sadly, people in the community who are going hungry, unsheltered and unsupported today. Even as we work towards a better future, we can't forget to help people who are are in need today.

Thanks to everyone who bought a book or two (or ten) off the cart this summer. Anyone who missed out on the fun is encouraged to make a donation directly to a charity of their choice.

Happy Holidays!
